Union slams Horse Riders’ naked calendar charity fundraiser.

Once again Union officers show how out-of-touch they are with students by slamming their own Equestrian society’s charity calendar.

15 students bared all in the name of fun and charity, posing alongside horses and in stables for a calendar that’s proving to be a storming success.

Fine fillies

Yet Union Exec Officer Katie Siddal, who’s paid £16,000 a year to represent the views of students, has seen this as a chance to take a dig at students showing some initiative.

Claiming that it objectifies the models who willingly posed for the calendar, Siddal said: “This will mean that their work in the community can continue and more publicity will be raised for the RDA.

“I do, however, think that there are other methods that can be employed to raise awareness and funds without taking off clothing.

“This is because some of the images taken could be seen to be objectifying the women involved.”

Tally-ho!

The Tab questions the effectiveness of these ‘other measures’, given Union’s idea of Christmas entertainment is to show 1930s classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” on four separate occasions. Just in case three wasn’t enough.

Enough to set the pulse racing

However, Club Captain Charlie Wright defended her members and their calendar. She said: “It has been a really effective way of raising money and there are lots of other societies that do exactly the same thing – it’s just that we do it better.”

Last year’s calendar raised over £2,000 for Otley and District Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), and this year’s, which can be purchased for £10, is expected to exceed that.

I don't see the problem. Cheerleaders do it every year. The more naked girls the better!

  • Amos

It seems there are two only consistent things about the Tab's pieces about the Union: 1. The Union is always wrong. 2. The 'facts' never check out. So the Welfare Officer's role is actually to provide support to student's health and wellbeing, which I think not endorsing naked calendars does fairly well. The sentiment that you needn't take off your clothes to raise money is completely fair and pretty much what the Welfare Officer is paid to say. Secondly, you are aware that it's the Hyde Park Picture House that are showing 'It's A Wonderful Life', right? The Union are merely showing what's on offer. 'Clutching at Straws' would be a better way of headlining this article.

God where do you get off?

      Everything Amos said. So right.

I think it speaks volumes about Katie Sidall that she managed to put forward two different views in one comment – yay for raising awareness for a good cause, but just recommending awareness of the potential negatives. Whether the Tab wants, or is able, to admit that nude calendars can contribute to the objectification of participants or not doesn't change the fact that the Welfare Officer here has made a reasonable point in a way that doesn't offer judgement or criticism, but simply seeks to raise awareness of both sides of the argument.

That said, I don't know what else I expected of the Tab…

    • Fuck Amos

      your a cunt

    • Cheers

Of course she does well representing their health and wellbeing, except for when she openly slates students… A bake sale is hardly going to raise as much money now is it?

    • girls of leeds

      WE LOVE YOU AMOS!

  • Amosisacunt

Amos, piss off you sanctimonious and grumpy fuck. How on earth does voluntarily posing for a naked calendar negatively effect a student's health or wellbeing? As an aside the Union (and the NUS) are some of the more useless institutions that have ever been devised.

    • right

well you are just hilariously wrong

In Amos' defence you'd be surprised how many "voluntary" calendars actually end up with committee members almost forcing members to take part. I'm not saying that these calendars don't raise funds and aren't fun for those who want to be involved. But I know a fair few people who've nearly been forced into taking their clothes off for these calendars, which is in no way "voluntary".

I'm an Amos fan. Comment on the article not the comments. I don't think the calendar is any different from the RAG calendar which receives wide support but Siddall's point is also valid. Stop the Amos bashing x

I think they should have put clothes on horses and made a calendar out of that. Nice pony in a cute thong. I'd buy it

  • Ben Cawood

Wouldn't buy a calendar with such butters specimens anyway

    Your normal inaccurate bullshit :P
